Labourer Carries 20kg Bricks Up 21 Floors as Four Lifts Remain Idle
A labourer carrying 20kg of bricks up 21 floors while four lifts remained idle has triggered a debate over housing society rules, workers' dignity and the treatment of essential service providers in Indian residential buildings.
The video shows a labourer hauling approximately 20kg of bricks up the stairs of a 21-storey building, despite four lifts being idle. The incident has highlighted the difficulties faced by construction workers and other essential service providers in residential complexes where access to elevators is restricted.
Reacting to the incident, advocate Ms Alvi described it as evidence that "humanity has died". She stressed that the people responsible for building cities deserve dignity and safety, drawing attention to the conditions under which labourers are expected to carry out physically demanding work.
The incident has also brought housing society elevator policies under scrutiny. Some residents defend restrictions on workers using passenger lifts, arguing that heavy construction materials and frequent movement could damage the elevators. However, critics say such restrictions reflect class-based biases and place an unfair physical burden on workers.

Many have called on residential societies to provide workers with access to service elevators or introduce permission-based arrangements that allow them to transport materials without being forced to use staircases.
The controversy is not limited to construction labourers. Similar incidents involving delivery personnel and domestic helpers have also raised concerns about restrictions imposed on essential workers in residential buildings.
The incident has renewed calls for greater consideration of workers' dignity and safety, highlighting the need to balance elevator maintenance concerns with fair access for the people who help build, maintain and serve residential communities.
